Meet the Event Team: Laura Silva, Director of Events
We’re all about hospitality here, so we figured it’s high time to introduce ourselves!
Over the course of the coming months, we’ll be doing a little series so you can get to know our event team better. We’re going to kick things off with Laura Silva, our Director of Events, who joined the HOUSEpitality Family 17 years ago in 2001.
Why did you decide to work in the wedding/event industry?
I’ve always loved getting to know people and working with a team. It’s rewarding to hear someone’s vision-- from all the big dreams to the tiny personal details-- and bring it to life.
What does a typical day look like for you?
Broadly, I lead and mentor our team of professional event coordinators and help them meet and exceed client's expectations while following policies and procedures.
On a day-to-day basis, I have team meetings and one-on-one meetings with our event coordinators and event managers, I seek out new products and services from vendors and meet with our Chefs to review menu and display specifics.
What is your best wedding planning tip?
My biggest tip is to hire professionals and put your trust in them to provide recommendations for your event vision.
And one more tip! If you're wearing a dress with a bustle, make sure there are a few folks who know how to adjust the bustle. I've seen many clients spend valuable reception time dealing with wardrobe malfunctions.
What’s something most people don’t know about you?
I do not like public speaking! I really don't want to be the emcee at an event.
What is your favorite thing about a wedding / reception at The Boathouse?
I absolutely love that our team gets to know the wedding couple so well during the planning process that we feel like part of the family and are thrilled to celebrate with them during their big day.
What’s your favorite season for a wedding, and why?
Fall, specifically, November. The trees are so colorful across the water and the temperatures are crisp but comfortable. Couples often use warm colors in their decor that coordinate well with the decor of the our different event sites.
What do you love about your job?
Feeling like I'm a part of a giant family. We work really hard to achieve our goals and value every member of the team.
